Terahertz Technology for Advanced NDT of Non-Metallic Materials: From Fundamentals to Industrial Applications
By Dr. Gaël Loubet
Research Associate at INSA, and Associate Professor at LAAS-CNRS
Abstract
Today, one of the main limitations to the deployment of wireless sensor networks remains the power supply of each individual device to ensure a low-cost and long-term deployment. In critical environments, data security is essential, however, in an effort to minimize as much as possible the power consumption of the nodes, trade-offs in features may limit the use of traditional cybersecurity solutions, which require bidirectional communication and computationally intensive operations.
This presentation focuses on the works of the MINC team at LAAS-CNRS (FRANCE) on battery-free wireless sensors in highly constrained environments, especially for Structural Health Monitoring. Their power supply via Wireless Power Transfer based on electromagnetic waves (thus, in far-field, over several meters) will be discussed, in particular when the deployment of an electrical grid, the use of batteries, and the harvesting of ambient energy are not feasible. Solutions that are low in computational, energy, and financial costs and which enable a node to be authenticated within a network will be introduced.
About the speaker
Dr. Gaël Loubet was born in Toulouse, France, in 1994. He received the Engineering Diploma degree in electronics and automatic control and the Ph.D. degree in micro- and nano-systems from the INSA Toulouse, Toulouse, in 2017 and 2021, respectively.
From 2021 to 2022, he was a Teaching and Research Associate with the INSA Toulouse and LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse, where he has been an Associate Professor since 2022. He has authored more than 30 articles in refereed journals or communications in international conferences.
His research interests include electromagnetic wireless power transfer, wireless communications and their low-level security for the Internet of Things, wireless sensor networks for cyber–physical systems’ implementation and structural health monitoring applications, and the hardware implementation of artificial neural networks in resource-constrained embedded devices.
