Husam Wafai, Ph.D.

PhD Student

Living in Melbourne, Australia.

Alumni

Biography

Mr. Wafai is working on the industrial research project on damage characterization of thermoplastic based fiber-reinforced composites. He studies macroscopic shear response of thermoplastic composite at different cooling rates, and mainly develop an experimental device for damage observation at micro-scale for thermoplastic composites at slow and high-speed.

Research Interests

Husam currently works on testing and characterization of mechanical properties and damage behavior of thermoplastic based fiber-reinforced composites. Before that, he worked on material modeling, starting from parametric study, up to formulating from scratch a multi-physics material model based on variational approach. Since he obtained his master degree in Material Science & Engineering, he worked on multiple projects:

  • Testing and modeling anisotropic deformation and damage of new Aluminum alloy Al-2198
  • Design and optimization of novel joints to connect Titanium sheets with CFRP Composites
  • Weak coupling of thermal heat and mechanical stress in laser welding process
  • Stress driven grain growth in Nano-crystalline metals
  • Modeling Chemo-Electro-Mechanical coupled behavior of Polyelectrolyte gels

Education

  • Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering, KAUST, Saudi Arabia (2018)
  • M.Sc., Material Science and Engineering, Christian Albrecht University, Kiel, Germany (2007)
  • B.Sc., Mechanical Engineering (Design & Production), Damascus University, Syria (2002)
