Dr. Alfano’s earlier research work covered the development of experimental techniques for the elastic characterization of isotropic and anisotropic materials, including plasma sprayed ceramic and metallic coatings. His recent research has been carried out in the area of computational fracture mechanics with emphasis on delamination of interfaces, and also on the development of surface preparation techniques for the fabrication of high-strength adhesive bonded joints.
His research activities at COHMAS-KAUST focused on (1) the identification of fracture parameters of bonded interfaces using inverse techniques and (2) on modeling hydrogen assisted cracking in steel pipes using cohesive elements.
