Daniel 's research involves the use of x-ray microtomography (microCT) in damage characterization of composite materials. MicroCT allows for the 3D reconstruction of a material’s internal geometry from a set of its 2D cross sections. With a resolution of micrometers, it is possible to characterize and measure damage mechanisms such as voids, microcracks, and delaminations within the composite samples.
Currently Daniel is studying transverse cracking in cross-ply laminates. The project combines microCT with in situ tensile testing in order to non intrusively observe the introduction of transverse microcracks with increasing loads. The product of this is a 3D internal crack network for laminates of various 90° ply thicknesses.
